Assertiveness Training with Arianna Penalba
626.824.8242Ultimately, I want you to feel more empowered and have the tools to be able to make authentic choices and improve the quality of your relationships.
Did you know that there are four communication styles?
Passive, passive-aggressive, aggressive and assertive. Something a lot of people don’t realize is that individuals who have tend to communicate passively actually experience more anger outbursts due to not addressing issues and tension mounting over time. A simple way to explain the assertive communication style goes something like this “Say what you mean, but don’t say it mean.”
I have also noticed in my 13 years plus of doing this work that many of my clients who struggle with being assertive have experienced co-dependent or enmeshed family dynamics in their life. In the assessment phase (usually the first two to three sessions) we’ll spend some time discussing your family of origin so that I can get a better understanding of your history and its impact on you.
We’ll first start off by identifying which of the four communication styles you tend to use and identify specific goals related to improving your communication. You’ll find that learning to say “no” will actually help you take better care of yourself and will ultimately also benefit your relationships. People usually respond well to limits and I have found that many clients report feeling more respected by others when they start being more assertive.
Do you find yourself having a hard time saying “no” and prioritizing everyone else but yourself?
Well, if so, you are not alone. Many of us, especially women, are raised to take care of everyone and then we find ourselves often tired, resentful, and not living fully authentic lives.
I absolutely love teaching my clients assertiveness skills as boundary setting because it helps them to live in a more authentic way and also to find a better balance between others’ needs and their own. It will be difficult, as most worthwhile things are, but you won’t be alone as I’ll be cheering you on and holding you accountable along the way.
